1 The presentation was made at a ‘National Workshop on Scanning Probe Microscopy: Techniques and Applications’ organised in March 2011 at the University of Pune to felicitate Dharmadhikari on his retirement.

2 This was the latest in the series of instruments made by Dharmadhikari and his students that has a piezo scanner and a tuning fork (length: 2.4 mm) from inside a wrist-watch condenser.

3 This STM was assembled inside a padded up plywood box to isolate vibrations.

4 The primary body governing higher education in India is the University Grants Commission (UGC) (www.ugc.ac.in). There are roughly 600 universities in India that includes a combination of central and state universities (both state supported and private), deemed universities (also state and privately supported) and others like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) that are called Institutions of National Importance (Banerjee, 2009; Deloitte, 2012; Ila, 2015). The S&T research infrastructure includes about 40 laboratories under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) that are concentrated on applied research and a number of other laboratories concentrated on both basic and applied science that come under respective S&T departments of the Government of India such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Space (DoS) and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) (Banerjee, 2009; Ila, 2015).
